This is fucking insane. The amount of extra matte layers/flats/compositing going on here is just unreal. This is all 2D, there’s no 3D geometry used at all.
Might recognize Sergio’s work if you’re a fan of Treasure Planet too, he was responsible for Dr. Doppler
