Quick Cure For Writer’s Block: Lower Your Expectations

theliteraryarchitect

Writer’s block, in my option, is basically paralysis brought on by perfectionism and high expectations of ourselves. So I recommend you combat it by lowering your expectations—drastically.

If you feel overwhelmed or blocked, set a small goal.

For example, tell yourself you’re going to write for 5 minutes. Then, if you write for 5 minutes, celebrate! You’ve reached your goal. But more often than not, once you begin writing, you’ll write for much longer than that.

Basically, the practice helps you loosen up and open the door to possibilities. If you don’t do something, your writing muscles just get more and more atrophied.

Try it—the next time you’re feeling blocked, commit to a small goal. Write for a minute. Two minutes. Write a sentence. A paragraph. A word. Just one word! Then celebrate. You’ve just conquered writer’s block.
