Even Memoirs Need Suspense
Suspense is not conflict. Suspense means keeping readers on the edge of the page, guessing and wondering what will happen next.
Even if the readers of your memoir know your story, and they obviously know you have survived, you can keep some things back. This will keep them interested enough to go all the way to the end to find out how you coped.
My cat Bishop sits outside my door every morning once she hears the alarm clock go off.
The morning murps
Someone has waited HOURS to tell you all the gossip.
this is like the cat version of the professor clip of him going “hello!” every morning the same way
my cat joined my dad and my dog on their morning walk
those meows: “wait for me, wait for me!”
this video nourishes me
As relaxing as I find this, I also find it oddly ominous and terrifying.
like, this is probably what you hear before you die???
this is what you hear as you walk through a dark forest feeling eyes on your back, and gradually you become aware of music playing and the closer you get the clearer this song becomes. it’s coming from a large abandoned church and you hear this through the stone walls and you stand rooted to the spot by the doorway too scared of what you’ll see if you peer through the door. there’s moss on the walls.
