Story Elements: Writing a Song

Anonymous asked: Hey. Your blog is the most helpful thing ever! :) So my novel is about a young rock band, and I am absolutely terrible at writing any kind of poetry, but really wanted the band’s lyrics to have a big impact on character development and plot, plus I figured they need to be really good lyrics since the reader doesn’t have the added push of a catchy melody to help appreciate them. Thoughts?

There are several things you can do to help get yourself into song writing mode:

• pull up the lyrics to your favorite songs and listen to them while you read the lyrics. Really pay attention to the words, imagery, and symbolism that are used
• read some poetry, and again, pay special attention to the words, imagery, and symbolism
• decide on a subject for each song you’re going to write. Then, for each subject, come up with a  mini-story to convey that subject. 
• if you’re stuck, try thinking of a title first, then build a story around the title
• for each song/subject, make a long list of descriptive words related to the subject/mini-story. Thesaurus.com will come in handy here. Just don’t go overboard.
• finally, start writing your first song. If you want, you can mimic the pattern of a favorite song. Just don’t copy lyrics or story, of course. 
• if you’re still stuck, try looking at pictures related to your subject. This will put some imagery into your head that you can describe and start to build upon.
• word hippo can help you with rhyming words
• remember—you don’t have to write out the entire song. If a lot of your band’s songs will make appearances in your story, you may want to use only a selection from each song to get the idea across.

A colleague of mine was talking to me recently about her misgivings about her capabilities regarding writing Women of Color. She wanted very badly to include several WOC characters in her sci-fantasy series, but she had some concerns about correct portrayal and writing them in a way that wouldn’t instantly piss people off.
