White Prince with Powers, PoC with None
Some questions to ask yourself. I feel addressing them will help you determine if there’s an issue here or not:
- What was the intent of giving the white person powers and no one else? Are there any non-white people in the story with powers?
- What makes the People of Color special and stand out? Such as special skills, a shining personality, etc. I don’t believe everyone needs to be powered up to be special, but are you demonstrating that they’re interesting characters as well in the writing?
- Do you focus more on the white person and hype them up over the Protagonists of Color?
- How do you bridge or at least acknowledge the power dynamics between the PoC and magician prince?

I just got one of the most beautiful messages ever from someone I came across and befriended YEARS ago on a different website. I lost interest in that website for reasons unknown to me, so I’m super happy we got back in touch.
And now I’m crying because they told me the way I acted towards them changed them for the better, and thanked me for that. It means so much to me.
Just…be nice to people, especially if they’re younger than you. You are influencing them with the way you behave, even if you might not be noticing it, and being kind to someone can change someone’s life.

Black Queen Wearing Head wrap
anonymous asked:
So this isn’t so much a question about “how do I write…” but more “how do you feel about…” so I apologise for that in advance!
I am writing a fantasy novel and one of the characters that my MC meets is a queen who I am writing as a black woman. In the first scene that she is in I describe her as wearing bright colours and wearing her hair in braids. But then in a later scene, I described her as being among her friends and family and wearing her hair in a head wrap that matches the dress that she is wearing.
I’ve done a lot of research on the history of the head wrap and I am well aware of the connections with slavery in America. My question is; how would you feel if you read this character was written in this way? It is not a huge problem if you think that it should be removed from the story, but I’m trying to ask as many black women as I can.
Thank you in advance!
Sounds perfectly fine to me. She has her hair in braids, and then she wrapped it up to match her dress. Just simple style choices, eh? I’d just keep it at that, as nothing has to be too deep about it.
